Scoping academic oracy in higher education: knotting together forgotten connections to equity and academic literacies

Although the importance of developing students’ academic literacies has been well-established, oracy forgotten. There is a paucity attention to in higher education, despite key role played by oral communication achievement and graduate employability. This study offers scoping review international scholarly literature that does exist, explore how framed discussed whether connections have made with equity agenda widen participation traditionally under-represented groups. Following Arksey O’Malley’s framework for studies, 31 papers reviewed suggest disparate ways, reflecting disconnected understandings range, breadth possibilities teaching. An as product perspective prevails predominantly explored through monologic, monoglossic activities, assessments, attributes. The highlighted need recognise an learning perspective; establish shared features oracy; embed teaching practices support all students, regardless linguistic educational background, within their disciplinary learning.
